Singapore & Malaysia in the Mix
Custom-crafted itineraries.
Designed around you, never around a template.
One mouthful of rojak can be sweet, sharp, spicy and crisp. This much-loved dish belongs to both Singapore and Malaysia, although each has its own versions. Its Malay name means "mixed", a word that also suits the overlapping languages, cuisines and traditions of these neighbours. Malay, Chinese, Indian and other influences appear in everyday conversations, places of worship and food shared across generations, often in combinations unique to each country.
Singapore brings that mix into a city of ambitious architecture, extraordinary gardens and entertainment that stretches from the nocturnal world of Mandai to the cinematic spectacle of Universal Studios and Sentosa. Kuala Lumpur introduces another temperament, where the Petronas Twin Towers rise above older neighbourhoods, Batu Caves carries the colour and devotion of Hindu Malaysia, and Genting opens into cooler highland air. In both cities, food stalls and neighbourhood streets often tell as much about the place as its grandest attractions.
Rojak: Singapore & Malaysia in the Mix is Duniya Safari's journey through two neighbours with a shared cultural vocabulary and distinctly individual personalities. The pleasure is in recognising something familiar, discovering how differently it is expressed across the border, and occasionally finding the whole story in a single plate of food.

The experiences that make this journey special
A carefully crafted journey, one unforgettable day at a time.
Arrive in Singapore, where an almost tropical abundance of greenery accompanies the journey into a city of glass towers, colourful neighbourhoods and remarkably orderly streets. Plenty to notice on the way to your hotel, from changing architecture to shopfronts bearing languages that have long shared the island. Singapore makes its first impression without much fuss.
But the evening has other plans. At Mandai's Night Safari, the city gives way to a world that comes awake after sunset. The tram moves through nocturnal habitats, with animals appearing from the shadows and unfamiliar sounds travelling through the trees. Somewhere between the rustling foliage and the darkened trails, it becomes easy to forget that one of Asia's busiest cities is only a short distance away.
Singapore has a particular talent for bringing unlikely neighbours together. A tour of the city brings you through its urban landscape, where old shophouses, places of worship and contemporary architecture belong to a city shaped by several communities. The details are often as interesting as the landmarks themselves, especially when traditional streets sit only a short distance from some of Asia's most ambitious buildings.
At Gardens by the Bay, the Flower Dome mixes gardens from different climates beneath an enormous glass roof, while the Cloud Forest surrounds you with mist, lush planting and a towering indoor waterfall. Outside, the Supertrees rise above the greenery like structures from another century. The day reaches its highest point at the Marina Bay Sands SkyPark Observation Deck, where the gardens, harbour and tightly packed skyline stretch across the horizon. Singapore has managed to make even its greenery spectacularly vertical.
Somewhere inside Universal Studios Singapore, the distinction between watching a movie and finding yourself in one begins to disappear. Familiar film worlds have their own streets, buildings, and rides, complete with dramatic soundtracks and the occasional surprise around the corner. Spend the day moving between themed attractions and performances, following whichever fictional universe catches your imagination next.
There is a certain freedom in a day that can jump between entirely different stories without leaving the same park. Later, if you still have an appetite for exploring, Singapore's hawker culture offers another kind of variety. One food centre might tempt you with Chinese noodles, Malay satay, Indian roti prata and a plate of rojak. Choosing what to eat can be almost as entertaining as deciding which ride to try next.
Sentosa is Singapore in holiday mode, with beaches, entertainment and the harbour all competing for attention. The cable car approaches the island from above, offering views of passing ships and the coastline before bringing you down towards its attractions. SkyHelix takes you skyward once more, this time in the open air, with an uninterrupted view across the island and the waters beyond.
Between the two, the day leaves room for a beachfront walk, a leisurely café stop or simply enjoying the atmosphere around Sentosa. As evening arrives, the shoreline becomes a stage for Wings of Time, where music, fountains, projections and light play across the water. The harbour that looked so different from the cable car earlier now disappears into darkness beyond the spectacle, leaving one last illuminated memory of Singapore.
Check out of your Singapore hotel and fly to Kuala Lumpur, where the second half of the journey begins with an intriguing sense of familiarity. Some words sound the same, favourite dishes reappear on menus, and the influences of Malay, Chinese and Indian cultures remain unmistakable. Yet Kuala Lumpur wears them differently. Its streets have their own bustle, its buildings carry different histories, and the Petronas skyline rises above a city with a distinctly Malaysian personality.
Once settled, spend the evening getting acquainted with the neighbourhood around your hotel. Perhaps the first introduction comes over roti canai and teh tarik at a mamak restaurant, or among the food stalls of Jalan Alor, where the aromas are often more persuasive than the menus. The mix has travelled across the border, acquiring a different accent and a few new flavours along the way.
Kuala Lumpur has a fascinating way of placing its many histories side by side. The guided city tour introduces a capital where traditional architecture, places of worship and old commercial neighbourhoods share the streets with modern developments. Malay heritage, Chinese influences and Indian traditions have each left their mark, sometimes in grand buildings and sometimes in the ordinary rhythm of a busy street.
The Petronas Twin Towers bring that story into the present, their gleaming surfaces catching the changing light above Kuala Lumpur. Islamic geometric influences appear in their design, while the city around them remains an extraordinary mix of architectural styles and everyday life. Spend some free time around KLCC or explore the shopping streets of Bukit Bintang. As evening lights begin reflecting across the glass towers, the familiar Kuala Lumpur skyline becomes hard to walk away from.
Beyond Kuala Lumpur's skyline, Batu Caves rises from the limestone with a magnificent golden statue of Lord Murugan at its entrance. Behind him, a staircase painted in bright colours climbs towards the temple caverns, where Hindu worship and daily devotion continue amid one of Malaysia's most extraordinary natural settings. The steps may be famous worldwide, but the flowers, offerings, and prayers belong to a living religious tradition.
The road then climbs towards Genting Highlands, bringing cooler air and forested hills into view. A cable car carries you across the green slopes, with mist sometimes drifting between the cabins and the mountainside. Genting has its own lively world of entertainment, shops, and restaurants to explore before returning to Kuala Lumpur. By evening, the colourful temple steps and the cloud-covered highlands have become two very different memories of the same day.
Check out of your Kuala Lumpur hotel and make your way to the airport for your onward flight. Perhaps you keep returning to a favourite moment: an animal appearing unexpectedly in the darkness at Mandai, the mist inside Cloud Forest, the first sight of the Petronas Towers, or the colour of Batu Caves against its ancient limestone. Then there are the smaller discoveries, especially those made over food, when something familiar arrives at the table tasting just a little different.
Rojak: Singapore & Malaysia in the Mix ends here with Duniya Safari. The two countries have shared so many ingredients across their histories, yet neither has followed quite the same recipe. And somewhere between the attractions, neighbourhoods and food stalls, you may already have found a few favourites worth returning for.
