The experience
Visiting Hagia Sophia is an experience that transcends centuries, allowing visitors to walk through layers of Byzantine and Ottoman history in one of the world’s most iconic structures. Originally built as a Christian basilica in the 6th century, later converted into a mosque, and now a revered museum and mosque once more, Hagia Sophia is an architectural wonder that reflects Istanbul’s rich cultural heritage.
Upon entering, visitors are greeted by the soaring central dome, which appears to float above due to the ingenious construction of its supporting arches. The interior is adorned with stunning mosaics, intricate calligraphy, and marble columns, each detail telling a story of its shifting role across eras and empires. Highlights include the Deësis Mosaic, which depicts Christ, the Virgin Mary, and John the Baptist, as well as the mihrab and minbar added during the Ottoman period, merging Christian and Islamic artistry. Visitors can explore the main prayer hall, the upper galleries, and the surrounding grounds, immersing themselves in the beauty of both Byzantine mosaics and Ottoman architecture.
